Tae Won Chung complained to his father about his poor relationship with Dave Warren, according to newly available court documents.
Judge Roderick Joyce's sentencing notes, released to the Herald on Sunday on Friday, reveal Chung's affidavit referred to a "pattern of mention of compulsory military service in Korea" when he was told off by his teacher.
In the affidavit, Chung acknowledged he did a "horrible thing" by stabbing Warren and "deeply" regretted his inability to control his anger.
"I pray every day for forgiveness and mercy," he said. "I promise I will get help for my anger and I will try to be a better person."
Judge Joyce's notes reveal the attack left Warren with spinal cord damage that paralysed his left leg "for a very appreciable period of time".
He was then confined to a wheelchair before progressing to crutches and after much physiotherapy can walk unaided, but with a limp.
He has diminished sensation in his foot, and it could be up to a year before he regains full function and movement in his left leg.
During sentencing, Warren told the court he would forever remember Chung standing over him with a "bloody knife", threatening him with the words "Don't ever **** with me".
He was having counselling to cope with flashbacks and was fearful when strangers approached him from behind.
