An Auckland high school student has been referred for a brain scan after being bashed in his boarding hostel dormitory.
The Year 12 Wesley College student, understood to be from the far north and newly enrolled at the school this year, suffered a fractured eye socket during the incident on Monday night.
Principal Ian Faulkner told the Herald last night that he had suspended a Year 13 student on Tuesday in relation to the matter, which had passed from his control to the school's board of trustees.
Both the school's board and that of the hostel would meet within seven days of the suspension to determine an outcome, Mr Faulkner said. The school began its inquiry into the matter on Tuesday morning after the injured boy arrived at the school's dispensary and reported the attack. Police had also been informed.
Mr Faulkner said the extent of the boy's injuries were not known. He was awaiting an update from family members last night.
"I'm talking with the family shortly who will no doubt give me the information that they have from the medical clinic. I know our doctor recommended that there be a scan just to find out what damage there had been, if any."
The assault occurred in an "open dormitory" which would have housed 26 students if it was full but the reason behind the attack remained a mystery, he said.
"Nobody can tell us what it's over, including the boy that I've suspended ... I cannot comprehend why the boy that was hit would invent anything and he knows no reason for this event happening. It's clear that he's been punched."
Mr Faulkner said the school's response to the matter would occur after the board of trustees had found an outcome.
