A young student is in critical condition after plummeting four storeys in front of horrified passers-by in central Wellington yesterday.
Sergeant Leon Candy of Wellington police said the 23-year-old student suffered serious head injuries when she fell from her apartment in Martin Square about 4pm.
Today she was still in critical condition in Wellington Hospital's intensive care unit.
Mr Candy said police had spoken to a number of witnesses who had seen the woman, who is Chinese, fall.
"It is being investigated by police but the circumstances are not considered to be suspicious," he said.
The woman's family had been contacted and were travelling from China to be with her, he said.
