An Otago University student studying for exams in her Dunedin home was bashed unconscious by an intruder yesterday afternoon.
She was taken to Dunedin Hospital for treatment to a head injury and was last night in a serious condition, the Otago Daily Times reported.
The 21-year-old was alone in her family home in Scobie Rd, Waverley, when the attack happened between 1.45pm and 2.15pm, said Detective Senior Sergeant Steve McGregor, of Dunedin police.
The woman phoned her mother, who worked nearby, after becoming alarmed at noises in the house.
The mother arrived home a short time later to find her daughter unconscious in her bedroom with a head injury and what was believed to be the weapon used in the attack lying nearby, Mr McGregor said.
He would not say what the weapon was.
Some personal property had been disturbed, but it was not known whether anything had been stolen.
Mr McGregor said police were treating the investigation "quite seriously".
