Fire crews throughout the Gisborne area were kept busy overnight as strong winds and arcing power lines started two major vegetation fires.
One fire burned within fifteen metres of a house and the other damaged one and a half hectares of young pine trees.
The fire at the Wainaki pine plantation took several rural fire crews and thirty forestry workers to control the blaze, while the second fire at Makarori Hill smothered three hectares of land, almost reaching a house.
Fire crews worked through the night and well into this morning to deal with both fires.
