KEY POINTS:
A deep earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale rumbled under Rotorua this afternoon.
The quake was 160km deep but was felt in the Wellington area and could have been felt on the east coast of the North Island, GNS Science said.
It struck at 1.59pm and was centred 10km southeast of Rotorua.
