The strongest wind gusts around north Auckland, Tauranga and the Coromandel will ease by mid-morning according to MetService.
Wind gusts of 100km/h have been recorded in southern parts of Coromandel overnight, while Tauranga has experienced gusts of 95 km/h.
Earlier this morning gusts of 90 km/h were recorded in Whangaparaoa, north of Auckland.
MetService meteorologist Ciaran Doolin said the strong winds gusts would ease this morning, and the winds die down by tomorrow.
"We had a watch out for strong gusts around Coromandel and Western Bay of Plenty... The westerly gale could get quite severe."
