A strong, shallow earthquake measuring magnitude 4.6 has shaken the West Coast early today.
Geonet reported the quake struck at 2.53am 40km south-west of Haast.
It was just 6km below the earth's surface and described as strong.
It was felt widely throughout the region and some reported in the North
Island reported feeling the tremor.
