Last weekend saw the Wairarapa 15-36 Strokeplay being held at Mahunga. The tournament was over 36 holes with 18 each day and produced some very interesting golf. Saturday produced a brilliantly fine day for golf but the scoring was nothing startling.
After the first round Rodney Flood led the way in the gross with 85 and Warren Fisher had a good lead in the nett with 68.
There were plenty in the pack with ordinary scores on Saturday who were still in the hunt before Sundays round but at the end of the day nobody was able to improve markedly with their Sunday rounds to threaten the first day leaders.
Rodney Flood's 80 on Sunday in continual drizzle was enough to seal the Gross championship with a two day total of 165 from Doug Leach with 171 and Innes Kennard with 173.
In the Nett section Warren Fisher's nett 71 on Sunday was enough for him to take out the Ron Hutcheson Nett Trophy with a total of 139 nett, from Ken Luke on 142 and Bill Leahy on 145.
Meanwhile in the club competition on Saturday again the scoring in the medal round was unspectacular. Darryl Coley took out group 1 with a nett 72 from Graeme Paulsen and Graham Duckett. In group 2 Bill Leahy took the group with nett 70 from Doug Leach with 71 and T Howard with 72.
Nearest to the pins went to Carl Cocks on Solway Pie Shop no. 1, Roger Hoar took no. 3and no. 17, Robbie McKelvey on McAuleys Transport no. 6, Kingi Ruhe no. 8 Solway Butchery, and Jeremy Harp Progressive Engineering no. 10. Holes in two were scored by Rob Mckelvey, Graeme Dick, Noelene Stevenson, T Howard who got 2 as did Roger Hoar who also took out the Birds Nest.
The ladies on Saturday had their Combined Committee Stableford round 3 and first was Noelene Stevenson with 39 points, from Evelyn Munn on 34, and Ngaire Graham with 33 points.
Sunday saw a small field in the club competition which was again a medal round. First was Doug leach with a nett 66 from Terry Fleet with 69 and Jake Paulsen with 72. Lukies Lucky Last went to Jake Gibbs with a nett 93.
On Tuesday the vets played a stableford round. Fred Brittain improved on his weekend rounds to take mens group 1 with 37 points from Len Christall with 35 points.
In group 2 John Harp was first with 41 points, well ahead of Lindsay Jordan with 33 points. Janet Campbell took ladies group 1 with 36 points from Maureen Flynn with 35, and in group 2 first was Irene Phelps with 36 points, from Noelene McGovern and Nancy Baylis on 35 points. Next week the vets have a stableford round.
This weekend sees the final round of the Marquis Shield being played at Carterton on Sunday. Mahunga are trailing Carterton in the Marquis Shield by half a point and met Eketahuna in the final round. The tee off time is 11am and the team is to meet at Carterton.
On Sunday the Mahunga Juniors are also representing the club in the final of the Junior Pennants competition which is being played at Judgeford which will present them with a good challenge.
It is great to see our juniors doing so well and they have been ably looked after by Alan Biel during the season. All the best to those representing the club this weekend.
Meanwhile this coming Saturday sees the first round of the Bell Family Trophy which is a mixed fourball bestball matchplay, while Sunday sees a medal round for the men and round 3 of the Ladies Malmo Par.
Good luck and good golfing.
