KEY POINTS:
As a minister, Winston Peters enjoys some of what he has previously described as "baubles of office". His standing down will see him stripped of at least some of these.
Endangered baubles:
* Salary drops from $195,700 as Minister outside Cabinet to $145,900 ($139,000 for party leader plus $1150 for each of his six caucus members).
* Free ministerial house.
* Shiny, new chauffeur-driven BMW ministerial car.
* VIP diplomatic passport.
* All expenses paid international travel. As Foreign Minister, Mr Peters spent more than any other minister on overseas travel. Including accompanying officials and staff, Mr Peters' travel bill came to $460,231 in 2006 and $441,922 in 2007. Trade Minister Phil Goff and Prime Minister Helen Clark's travel bills have hovered between $220,000 and $340,000 a year.
* Hobnobbing with the likes of US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
