Striking timber worker Harvey Edmonds tackled a moving vehicle so co-workers could slip through the gates at Carter Holt Harvey yesterday.
The incident came after more than 100 striking workers drove to the company's laminated veneer plant in Ruakaka about 9am with the aim of meeting with management.
About 10am, it was agreed a small delegation could meet with management but when the gate opened, Mr Edmonds parked his car and began waving others through.
A lone security guard attempted to drive his car across the road to stop the flow but Mr Edmonds leapt in front of the vehicle, gripping the bonnet in a determined tackle.
Other workers then grabbed the front of the ute after it surged forward and bounced it up and down in a bid to force it back.
Police were called and the security guard attempted to close the gates.
"Our delegates asked if they could go on site and they said no. The adrenaline was running," Mr Edmonds said.
Workers then walked to the plant's cafeteria where union officials informed them they were legally trespassing and that no headway had been made in their discussions.
Site manager Russell Neilson then addressed the workers on the condition that no union officials were present.
The workers want a 5 per cent pay rise, shift and meal allowances and leave entitlements. The company has offered 3 per cent.
Workers expressed disappointment the company had been unwilling to budge on negotiations before the strike.
When asked how long the company could hold its position, Mr Neilson indicated it could maintain it forever.
After the discussion, the workers filed out the gates past a line of police officers.
Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union (EPMU) Northland organiser Robert Popata said members later voted overwhelmingly to remain on strike.
The veneer factory strike is part of a national campaign to win wage rises of 5 per cent or more at Carter Holt Harvey plants.
The Ruakaka workers have been out on strike for 19 days.
Company spokesman Paul Mackay said the company would not pursue legal action over the matter unless there was damage or intimidation involved.
