A "messy" weekend is on the way, as a thunderstorm which caused flash floods and power cuts in Victoria hits New Zealand.
The storm saw Sydney residents sweat through their hottest night in four decades and caused damage to homes and vehicles.
Weather Watch forecaster Philip Duncan said the storm has eased on its way across the Tasman, however.
"We're not expecting thunderstorms here, but the weather will be messy this weekend.''
Patchy showers and cloudy periods are expected for most of the country, with central New Zealand bearing the worst of the choppy weather on Saturday.
The chilly winds seen yesterday will be kept at bay until at least Sunday, thanks to a high drifting in from the North West.
