More than a dozen fire crews were called out to a fire in a large storage warehouse in Onehunga overnight.
Crews were called to the blaze that had engulfed a compactor machine at the back of the Patrick Street building about 12.30am, northern fire communications shift manager Colin Underdown said.
Fifteen crews were called to the scene and three remained there this morning.
The blaze, that was not considered to be suspicious, was contained within the compactor machine and the building escaped major damage, Mr Underdown said.
A number of fans were needed to ventilate the building of smoke.
