The war medals stolen from the Waiouru Army Museum will go back on public display at the museum, the Army said yesterday.
Ninety-six medals, including nine Victoria Crosses, were stolen in raid early on December 2. They were back in police hands in February.
Police paid part of a $300,000 reward for their recovery. Some sources reported that part of the money went to the thieves.
Army deputy chief Brigadier Phil Gibbons said police still held the medals for forensic testing. The museum and Army were working with security experts to ensure the medals could go back on display in "an enhanced security environment".
"I'm happy for the medals to remain with the police for as long as needed if it means a vital piece ofevidence can be secured to catch those who stole them," Brigadier Gibbons said yesterday.
"Once the police have finished their investigation, the medals will be returned to their rightful home at the Waiouru Army Museum."
He said New Zealanders had the right to see an important part of their history.
