A stolen car was found ablaze in the middle of a Carterton street early yesterday.
Carterton fire chief Wayne Robinson said the older model Hyundai vehicle had been abandoned in the middle of the road in Booth St and torched about 3.45am.
He said there had been a sustained horn blast sounding from the vehicle that woke nearby residents, who reported the blaze.
"The car was well involved when we got there. It must have been burning for a while. Police were called and the car had apparently been stolen, although whoever took it had already fled the scene," Mr Robinson said.
Firefighters were at the site for almost half an hour before extinguishing the blaze.
