The driver of a stolen car drove at high speeds the wrong way along an Auckland motorway early today while attempting to flee from police.
The incident started when police saw the stolen Subaru entering the motorway at Khyber Pass at 3.25am, police say.
When they tried to stop the vehicle the driver fled and left the motorway at Market Road, then entered the motorway off ramp at Market Road and drove south in the northbound lane at speeds of 110km/h.
Motorway cameras reported that the car did a U-turn at Mt Wellington and then drove north in the northbound lane to Ellerslie Panmure off ramp where it left the motorway, police said.
On the Ellerslie Panmure interchange roundabout the car drove round the roundabout the wrong way while police headed towards the roundabout.
