Two teenagers were driving a stolen car when they sped past police officers and lost control, crashing into another driver just seconds after a chase began.
The boys, 15 and 16, were travelling between 100 and 120km/h in the Mazda Demio heading south towards Cambridge on Cambridge Rd/ State Highway 1 near the Avantidrome about 4.05pm today, a police spokeswoman said.
A patrol car from Cambridge was searching for the stolen car at nearby St Peter's School when it spotted it speeding.
A member of the public had called *555 to report the Mazda Demio was driving dangerously at speeds in excess of 120km/h.
Officers started following the car and had just put on their lights and siren to pull the car over when it lost control just as it went around a bend.
