More than 2000 avocados stolen from a Whangarei orchard had recently been sprayed and are unsafe to eat, police say.
Last Thursday night thieves stole about 1000 avocados from the orchard at Maungatapere, Northland, and the following night returned and stole a further 1000.
Police said the avocados had recently been sprayed and cannot be eaten for 14 days.
The public were warned to be wary of cheap avocados being offered for sale, especially if they are not being sold through a retailer or genuine market stall.
If people are suspicious about avocados being offered for sale, they can call their local police or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
