A fisherman stung by a stingray while catching fish on Motutapu Island last night received hospital treatment for an injury to his ankle.
The Auckland man, aged 25, was fishing off the rocks at about 8.30pm when he is believed to have stood on the stingray and its barb pierced his skin, said Westpac Rescue Helicopter paramedic Dave Grimshaw.
"He was in quite a bit of discomfort and was unable to put weight on (his ankle). It's quite a small wound because often the barb penetrates quickly," he said.
The man was flown to Auckland hospital for treatment.
It was not known if the barb had stayed in the man's foot because they were often quite small, said Mr Grimshaw.
