KEY POINTS:
Warnings are being posted around Nelson's beaches after an invasion of stinging jellyfish.
Cawthron Institute scientists believe they may be Lions Mane Jellyfish, which have been spotted along the coast from Tahunanui to Kaiteriteri.
Their nasty sting, which can cause an allergic reaction in some people, seems to remain active even after the jellyfish have washed ashore and died.
Nelson City Council Parks and Facilities Manager Paul McArthur said there was no reason to suppose the visitors posed a serious threat to beach users.
But he said - with so many children using beaches during the holidays - people needed to be aware of the risk.
