The 82-year-old Kopu Bridge near Thames has been closed until further notice, due to a structural issue with a steel beam.
The New Zealand Transport Agency has closed it to traffic. Officer in charge of traffic Sergeant Jim Corbett of Thames police said it was a "minor problem but it is going to take several hours to fix".
"A steel beam in the middle has flipped over so it is actually sticking up six inches above the road, so it is prevent vehicles from going through.
"There's a crane at the moment shifting that beam and they'll probably look at some repair work as soon as possible to get it operating again.
"They may do temporary repairs to get it going and may have to shut it down at night and fix it properly."
