Kiwis took 1.09 million overseas holiday trips in the year to September.
This was 71,200 more holiday trips than in the previous September year, Statistics New Zealand said.
"More New Zealand residents travelling to the Cook Islands, Australia and Fiji helped drive this increase," population statistics manager Jo-Anne Skinner said.
In September, New Zealand residents made 267,900 trips overseas, a new record for the month, and a 14 per cent increase from September 2015.
Meanwhile a new record was set for visitor arrivals last month, thanks to the Aussies.
