State Highway 25A (Kopu-Hikuai Rd) on the Coromandel Peninsula has now reopened, after a fire spread from a car and a boat into the bush just before 12pm this morning.
Fire Service communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said the fire has been described as "large", with nine appliances called out, with crews from Thames, Tairua, Puriri and Onemana at the scene.
Mr Phillips said there had been a problem getting enough water supply to tackle the blaze, but the fire has now been brought under control.
Police said considerable traffic has built up and drivers can expect delays if travelling on the road.
