A motorcyclist has been flown to hospital after a serious crash on State Highway 2 near Kaitoke, Upper Hutt, earlier this afternoon.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman told the Herald the motorcyclist had been helicoptered to hospital in a critical condition after the incident.
A police spokesperson said the motorcyclist hit a barrier which forced the temporary closure of the road.
The road was reopened after the incident occurred earlier this afternoon around 4.30pm.
Emergency services attended the scene on Remutaka Hill which saw both lanes of traffic on SH2 close temporarily.
