State Highway 2 is closed at Mangatawhiri following a serious crash at about 2:30pm involving a car and a truck loaded with sand.
One person has been taken to hospital by helicopter with serious injuries.
Traffic is being diverted around the crash site and the Police serious crash unit will be investigating the cause.
It is anticipated that the road will be closed for several hours as heavy equipment will be required to recover the truck and clear the roadway.
