The earthquake took our Marmite away.
Now, in a way, it has given some back.
Six weeks ago Christchurch supermarket owner Craig Grant was forced to close the doors of his Fresh Choice supermarket in Merivale after engineers discovered part of the mall housing it was earthquake prone.
The closure was a big blow for Grant, but it had one unexpected benefit - it protected a half-pallet of Marmite ordered just before the closure and stashed safely in the supermarket's storeroom.
Jars of the favourite Kiwi spread have been flying off supermarket shelves since its maker Sanitarium announced on Monday that supplies were expected to run out in a few weeks. Quake damage at the company's factory in Christchurch forced a shutdown.
