Christmas was made a little brighter for Starship patients and their families yesterday as more than 3000 stars were hung throughout the hospital.
Children from throughout New Zealand took part in this year's Mercury Energy Stars for Starship competition.
Patient Aleesha Mehta, 14, hung the winning star, which was made by Dylan Roberts in Year 4 at Maihihi School, Otorohanga.
Dylan's 3D bling-star is covered in pearls, sequins and sparkly beads and impressed the judges with its intricate beadwork and detailing.
Students from 580 primary schools turned blank cardboard stars into festive decorations. Each school sent its best six stars for judging and the winning entries were hung on the Starship's Christmas tree.
The winning designers also received a digital camera and $1000 worth of books for their school.
The remaining stars were hung throughout wards and patients' rooms.
