Red Star crushed Greytown by 64 runs in their Umpire's Cup senior men's interclub cricket match at Greytown on Saturday, and remained on track for a finals berth in the process.
The one-day competition has continually brought out the best in the Red Star line-up, which have shown nothing like the same consistency in the Bidwell Cup two-day series where they trail the field.
Saturday's win was set up by a knock of 78 by opener Daniel Stoneley, one of several newcomers in the Wairarapa team to play Nelson in a Hawke Cup elimination match at Nelson next weekend.
Stoneley struck seven 4s and one 6 and saw Red Star through a shaky period where they lurched from 1-12 to 87-6,
He was well supported by another of the new faces in the Wairarapa line-up, Jarrod Watt, who came in at number seven and hit four 4s and a 6 in his 41, while other handy contributions down the order came from Peter Sigvertsen (21) and Willie Thomson (20 not out).
Red Star ended their 47 overs at a healthy 233-9 with the most successful of the Greytown bowlers being Josh Doherty, who took 3-30 from his 10 overs. Seth Rance finished with 2-45 and Ewan Burt 2-38.
Greytown never looked like overhauling the Red Star tally and were all out for 169, but Seth Rance showed his allround capabilities with a rollicking 70, which included seven fours and five sixes. Josh Doherty hit two fours and a six in his 23 and Ewan Burt made 19.
Watt completed a fine game with bat and ball by claiming 3-48 off nine overs, while Willie Thomson took 3-15 off six overs and Carwyn Caffell 2-46 off 10 overs.
Academy kept Red Star company at the head of the points table with an exciting one-wicket win over Lansdowne.
Yet another of the Wairarapa newcomers in David Irvine top scored with 46 as Academy reached 177-9 in reply to Lansdowne's 176, the top scorers in which were Scott Coulson (56) and Dane Buchanan (39).
The Battle of the College saw saw Rathkeale College defeat Wairarapa College by 67 runs.
Batting first Rathkeale got through to 181 with Doug Bracewell making 35 and Dean van Deventer 35. Bowling for Wairarapa College, Joel Macklin took 3-32 and T. Adamson 3-43.
Wairarapa College were all out for just 114, with Andy Dodd (3-23) and D. Fleming (3-21) spearheading the Rathkeale attack.
