Celtic's hopes of winning Netball Wairarapa's premier one title nosedived yesterday with news star shooter Hope Phillips was no longer eligible to play for them this season.
Phillips has been ousted after taking the court for Taita in the regional superleague series last Saturday.
It's a situation which has arisen because rules for that competition state once a player participates there they can no longer turn out for any other club side, the sole exception being college students who can be given special dispensation to play for a club and their school.
As it is the case with the sole Wairarapa representative in the superleague, Harcourts who were given permission to include two Kuranui College pupils, sisters Waimarama and Te Ata Phillips, in their squad.
The loss of Hope Phillips has shocked Celtic coach Dayle Clarkson who is adamant neither she nor the player had been given a copy of the superleague rules, despite Clarkson asking Netball Wairarapa for them on more than one occasion.
"It's news to me that Hope can't play. No one has bothered to officially communicate that to me or Hope either," Clarkson said when approached by the Times-Age for comment yesterday.
"It's all pretty frustrating, and that's putting it mildly!".
Clarkson said Phillips was not harming her Celtic commitments by playing for Taita because premier one matches in Wairarapa are staged at the Genesis Recreation Centre in Masterton on Thursday and Friday nights.
Which meant in turn that Saturdays were free for her to travel over the hill to represent Taita, firstly in the Hutt Valley competition and then in the superleague.
Clarkson is confident the depth of talent in her side will continue to see them among the front-runners for the Wairarapa premier one title but she concedes the loss of Hope Phillips is a big blow to them.
"You are talking about probably the best shooter in the competition so it's not hard to imagine how much she means to us," she said.
Netball Wellington's regional superleague manager Raewyn Clarke confirmed Hope Phillips would no longer be eligible for Celtic because of her having played in the superleague for Taita.
She said the relevant rule had been introduced so players could not easily move between clubs, thereby stopping them from affecting the development of others
"W e don't want a situation where the better players can play two , or maybe even three, competitions in different centres "she said. "It's all to do with the development process, we want to give everybody a fair go."
Premier one matches in Wairarapa continue tonight with Wairarapa College playing St Matthew's Collegiate at 6.45pm and Gladstone All Blacks playing Carterton Sports Arena at 8.15pm. Then tomorrow Fagan Motors Hot Shots will meet Kuranui College at 6m and Celtic will play newcomers Pioneer Blue at 7.30pm.
