Hamilton police are talking to several people after a man armed with a boning knife threatened to kill himself and a woman early today.
Sergeant Dave Raffan said police were called to a property in the inner-city suburb of Frankton about 3.30am after reports a woman was being threatened.
"On our arrival we found the 26-year-old male had the woman in the room and was armed with a large boning knife.
"A stand-off ensued during which police attempted to subdue the aggressive man who was threatening to kill both himself and the female," Mr Raffan said.
"After an hour's negotiation the man was convinced the police staff were there to help him and the woman was no threat and he was taken into custody."
The man has been arrested and will be charged with possession of a knife, Mr Raffan said. Further charges may be laid.
He said this was not the first incident of this type Hamilton police attended in the past few days, though it was more serious than most.
"Our advice to people is to seek help before situations deteriorate to such a level as today.
"There are a number of Government and non-Government agencies as well as the Police dedicated to help people in difficult relationships and we ask people to make use of these resources before it becomes too late."
