The highlight of the week at Carterton was the playing of the Wairarapa Team Stableford competition on Sunday, March 26.
There were seven clubs competing, each with a team of twelve players.
The best ten players' scores counted in the competition for the trophy.
Carterton had held this trophy for the past four years but their reign ended on Sunday.
The Eketahuna team came through with a ten best scores total of 374 points, 24 points clear of both Carterton and Castlepoint. Carterton took second place by virtue of their better first non-counting score.
Congratulations are due to the Eketahuna team which comprised Gavin Matthews, Lindsay Bourke, Jim Sutherland, Peter Campbell. Elva Stringfellow, John Duffy, Christie Biddle, Peter Fouhy, Barry Mason, Lynne Sutherland, Janice Duffy and Edith Campbell.
The Nearest the pin prize on hole 12 was won by David Wills, the equivalent on hole 15 by Bart Guckert who also won the nearest the pin in two on hole 16.
MEN ? SATURDAY:
The men's Broadbent Cup, round 1, was played by the men on Saturday, March 25.
This is a two round, stroke competition, the second round of which will be played next Saturday.
Karl Churchward has at least got a finger on the trophy by virtue of his Saturday round of nett 67, two better than the next best player, Piri Gillies.
Karl won the group 1 men's competition with his score, Piri was runner-up and three players scored 70. The countback system placed them in the order of Cameron Coutts, Tim Druzianic and Craig Wilson.
Ian Gordon, Matt Casey and George Rink all returned nett 71's.
In the higher handicap group Ian Fellingham won the day with his nett 70 but only on countback from Wayne Taylor.
Keith Rayner scored 72, Dean Schaef, 73, and Barry Hare 74. Shaun Kilford and Brayden Mazey both scored 75.
The Marquis of Normanby Hotel Men's Nearest the Pin was not won on this occasion, hole 9 getting the better of the field.
The "All Teed Up" ball for the 19 plus handicap men was won by Barry Hare.
WOMEN ? SATURDAY:
The women also competed for their Broadbent Cup on Saturday, the difference being that the women compete on a stableford basis.
Barbara Birchall has one hand on the cup with her leading score of 37 points being three better than second-placed Bev Tregurtha, Lyn Andrews and Emma Wills.
Ngaire Taylor completed the prize winners' list with her 33 point score.
The New World Carterton Women's Nearest the Pin competition was won by Corrie van Zanten and the "All Teed Up" ball by Sue Braiden.
Barbara Birchall scored the only hole in two of the day ? men or women.
VETERANS ? TUESDAY:
Persistent rain and wind caused the postponement of the scheduled visit by players from the Palmerston North Golf Club on Tuesday, March 28, and this visit will, hopefully be able to be scheduled for a later date.
WOMEN? WEDNESDAY:
A par round, round 1 of the Coyle Cup competition, was played by the women of the club on Wednesday, March 22.
Verna Parker did her chances in this competition no harm at all by returning a score of five up which was two better than Mary Edwards and four better than both Bernice Parker and Judy Wright.
Natalie Mallitte finished square while three players ? Flo Watkins, Shirley Carew and Margaret Bradshaw ? all finished two down.
Long driving competitions were won by Shirley Carew, silver, Margaret Bradshaw, bronze 1, and Judy Wright, bronze 2.
Sue Braiden seems to be making a habit of winning the "All Teed Up" ball for the day and Sue also managed to score two holes in two, as did Natalie Mallitte, while Judy Shakespeare also scored a hole in two.
FOOTNOTE:
I have a small book of golf quotations but the one that I enjoyed the most on second reading was one by Dave Hill who said " Golf is the hardest game in the world to play and the easiest to cheat at."
It is also a game in which the temptation to cheat can be very great at times.
The fact that the great majority of golfers are pretty honest, at least about their scores, seems to indicate that the game teaches us all some very valuable lessons.
