A 16-year-old boy is in custody after a student was fatally stabbed during the attempted robbery of a dairy in Manurewa.
The 22-year-old was attacked during a botched robbery at Finlayson Superette in Clendon about 1.30pm. St John Ambulance confirmed he died at the scene.
Local resident Satend Kumar was at the dairy shortly after the stabbing.
He said the victim was a university student, who had been filling in for his father at the shop.
"When I went to the shop, the gentleman was lying on one of the chairs, his head bowed down and blood dripping out of his face," he told Newstalk ZB.
"He was slashed on both sides of his neck and also stabbed in the chest."
Witnesses told TVNZ Mr Naidu's assailant had stood in the door of the dairy after the attack holding a knife and "huffing and puffing".
Police said members of the public chased and caught the alleged offender after the stabbing.
They said the youth in custody was expected to face "serious charges" over the incident.
No further details on the deceased or the events surrounding the homicide have yet been revealed by police.
