A 31-year-old man who was stabbed in a random attack in Cambridge last night is undergoing surgery today.
A second man, aged 34, who was also stabbed, was in a stable condition in Waikato Hospital's High Dependency Unit, hospital spokeswoman Mary Anne Gill said.
Detective Dean Schrader, of western Waikato CIB, said a 23-year-old local man had been arrested for the attack , which happened about 11.20pm at the intersection of Victoria St (State Highway 1) and Queen St.
It was believed the 23-year-old was walking with a woman when he took exception to the two men walking in front of them and laughing at something.
Without warning, he approached the pair and punched one in the face, Mr Schrader said.
The 31-year-old was then stabbed in the face and arm. The 34-year-old was stabbed in the back as he went to help him.
Police found the 23-year-old at a Hamilton Rd house which they then cordoned off.
"The AOS were called in on account of the random and serious nature of the attack," Mr Schrader said.
The man was in custody facing two charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Police had not found the weapon used in the attack, thought to be a knife.
"If anyone finds a weapon of this type in the Cambridge area we ask that you don't move it, ensure it won't be disturbed and contact police," Mr Schrader said.
He also appealed for any witnesses to the attack to come forward.
