A 58-year-old man arrested after allegedly chasing another man through a Porirua supermarket carpark and stabbing him repeatedly has been taken to hospital with a suspected heart condition.
Detective Sergeant Andrew Saunders of the Porirua police said the man was taken into custody last night following a serious "domestic-related" assault outside New World around 7.45pm.
The victim and a woman were waiting at the bus stop outside the supermarket when another man arrived and spoke to the woman.
This man then chased the victim through the carpark and then stabbed him in the neck several times before two passersby intervened and pulled him off the victim.
The victim was taken to hospital and was listed in a serious but stable condition.
Shortly after the incident, the suspect was also taken to hospital with a suspected heart condition.
Mr Saunders said police were hoping to speak to him this morning and serious assault charges were likely to be laid.
"Had it not been for the courageous actions by members of the public it is highly likely that police would be investigating a homicide," he said.
