A woman who was allegedly stabbed up to 14 times by her husband in an attack overnight, has undergone further surgery in Waikato Hospital.
Police arrived at the couple's home in the rural settlement of Tahuna, near Morrinsville, last night to find the wounded 26-year-old woman.
Her 29-year-old husband told officers he arrived home to find his wife had been stabbed by an intruder who demanded she hand over her jewellery.
However, on the way to hospital in an ambulance the woman said her husband had attacked her.
She underwent surgery overnight and today, and was now recovering in hospital, Waikato field crime supervisor Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Whitehead said.
"Her alleged attacker, her 29-year-old husband, was arrested at the scene and has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm."
Anyone who was a victim of domestic abuse was urged to seek help, Mr Whitehead said.
"Police take all domestic violence complaints very seriously and there have been a raft of legislation introduced to assist in dealing with such situations," he said.
"But to be able to take action police need to know there is an issue, we need victims to come forward and we need the community to spread the message domestic violence is not okay."
