Defending champions St Matthew's Collegiate bounced back from their first round defeat with a solid 32-28 win over Gladstone All Blacks in their Netball Wairarapa premier one match played at the Genesis Recreation Centre on Monday night.
It was a pleasing result for coach Jo McKenzie, who said St Matthew's
were a "very different" team, from that beaten by Kuranui College by all of 20 goals on opening day, different not so much in personnel but in attitude.
"There was a lot more intensity this time, we wanted it more, " McKenzie said."There's still a lot of scope for improvement but it was certainly a step in the right direction."
Gladstone All Blacks actually held an 8-4 lead at the end of the first quarter at which stage St Matthew's made a couple of positional changes. These had the desired effect with the college side "winning" the next three quarters to edge ahead on the scoreboard.
Goalkeeper Jayne Kersten had an outstanding match for St Matthew's picking up a number of tips and interceptions and her combination with Jesse Smith at the defensive end was a key component in their victory. Also impressive was the accurate shooting of Sophie Deans who played all but the first quarter and had a 75 per cent success rate.
Kuranui College made it two wins from as many matches when they recovered from a slow start to beat Sports Arena Carterton 42-35, also at the Genesis Recreation Centre on Monday night..
After trailing at halftime Kuranui levelled things up by the end of the third quarter and then dominated the fourth and final quarter, scoring seven more goals than their opposition in that period of play. Goal defence Te Ata Phillips was a major contributor to the Kuranui win as was her sister Waimarama Phillips while Rachel Finlayson, who is a newcomer to premier one play this season, did well at wing attack.
