St Matthews Collegiate will be thirsting for revenge when they meet Wairarapa College in a Netball Wairarapa premier one match at the Genesis Recreation Centre tonight.
The two colleges met in the grand final of the premier one competition last year, and in a closely-contested match it was Wairarapa College who won by just three goals, 42 to 39.
Indications are the going will be tougher for both sides in the top league this season, with first round matches last weekend seeing Wairarapa College taken to the wire by Carterton Red before winning 48 to 46, and St Matthews going down by the one goal, 21 to 20, to Gladstone All Blacks.
For St Matthews to win tonight they will have to formulate tactics which will nullify the influence of Wairarapa College's Abby Hull, who is a huge talent at goal shoot.
Do that and promising players of their own like Ella Biggs, Pip Lynch and Harriet Somerville could lead St Matthews to victory.
Harcourts went on a goal scoring rampage against Hiona last weekend. scoring a massive 72 goals, and while Greytown will make it tougher for them in their match at the Genesis Recreation Centre tonight another big Harcourts victory is on the cards.
A couple of youngsters in Hope Phillips and Katie Wyeth starred for them last time, and are sure to be prominent again.
The inexperienced Kuranui College side were brave in defeat when they met Greytown in their introduction to regional one play, but life won't be any easier for them when they play Carterton Red tomorrow.
The latter gave Wairarapa College a decent fright and give the impression they will become a leading contender for the regional one title as the season progresses.
Also tomorrow Gladstone All Blacks will be looking to build on their impressive start to the season when they take on a Hiona team which felt the full brunt of Harcourts in their opening game. All Blacks will be hot favourites to win this one by a handsome margin.
AGE GROUPS
Meanwhile, trials have been held for the selection of the year seven and eight Wairarapa netball teams with over 40 girls turning up for the year sevens, and 50 plus for the year eights, a mark of the interest amongst this age group in representing their province. Coaches Trudy Hullena and Linda Douglas, plus three selectors, were all pleased with the standard of play and commented on the difficulty they had in finalising their sides.
The year seven squad was named today and is: Anna Garnett (MIS), Talia Hullena (Chanel), Evie Langlands (Hadlow), Kynneta Mason (Lakeview), Claire Lynch (St Matthews), Teena McGregor (MIS), Sam McQuade (Chanel), Bailey Petersen (MIS), Shontae Reeves (MIS), Michaela Scott (MIS), Emma Stiven (Wainuioru), Merina Tafa (Lakeview), Nikita Wilson (Lakeview), Amy Young (Greytown).
The year eight team will be named after another trial on May 16 and published in next Friday's Times-Age.
Training sessions for these teams will be at the recreation centre on Tuesdays from 5.30pm to 7pm and the May 16 practise for the year sevens is also to be attended by a parent or guardian. Coach of that team is Trudy Hullena ('phone 3786588) while Linda Douglas (3701562) takes the year eights. Inquiries can be made to Janine Sim ( 3770949)
