The three men responsible for damaging the Waihopai Valley satellite dome in 2008 are liable for damages, the High Court at Wellington has found.
Attorney-General Chris Finlayson, claimed $1.2 million in damages.
The amount of damages the defendants may have to pay will be considered at another hearing.
But Associate Judge David Gendall said the verdict of the jury in the criminal case against the men had little to with the claim for damages.
If he found the men were not liable for damages, it would create a precedent that could allow vigilantes to act with impunity, he said.
