Sports Arena Carterton edged out Gladstone All Blacks 41-40 in a tense and exciting Netball Wairarapa premier one semi-final match at the Colombo Road courts on Saturday.
Up 11-8 at the end of the first quarter Sports Arena Carterton were outplayed by Gladstone All Blacks in the second quarter and at halftime the two teams were level pegging at 21-21. Both the third and fourth quarters were also closely contested with Sports Arena Carterton having a slender one goal advantage, 31-30, at the end of the third and still being just a solitary goal in front at the final whistle.
The strength of the Gladstone All Blacks defensive effort was evidenced by the Sports Arena Carterton shooters having a success rate of less than 70 per cent and they owed their victory to the efficiency of Annelise Taloa and Gaylene Malcolm on attack and Renee McDougall on defence.
Under the repechage competition format Sports Arena Carterton will now play the loser of next Saturday's semi-final match between the two top seeds, Harcourts and Kuranui, for a place in the grand final.
