Sports fans and collectors will get a rare chance to snap up some sporting memorabilia when hundreds of items go under the hammer in Auckland next month.
A treasure trove of memories from the famous 1924 Invincibles All Black team, and the boxing gloves David Tua wore for his 2000 world heavyweight title bout against Lennox Lewis, are among hundreds of sporting keepsakes for sale at Webb's on July 7.
The auction has been timed to coincide with the Lions supporters in town for the Auckland match on July 5 and the final test against the All Blacks on July 9.
"It's going to be great," said auctioneer Ross Millar.
"I think with all the sports-oriented people in Auckland that week, interest will be keen. We're hoping to see some of the Barmy Army along as well."
The haul of sporting history comes mainly from two collections: memorabilia once displayed on the walls of the Rose and Crown Tavern in Wellington, and the prized possessions of Invincibles team member Fred Lucas.
Lucas played seven tests for the Hall of Famers between 1924 and 1930 - the last four against the Lions in New Zealand, when the All Blacks won 3-1.
Other mementos include framed playing jerseys from the 1987 Rugby World Cup, numerous signed photos and a Lions jersey.
Some of the items will be keenly sought by collectors. An Ireland jersey Lucas brought back from the Invincibles' unbeaten 32-match tour to Britain, France and Canada is expected to sell for around $2000.
There are also 29 signed individual portraits of the Invincibles team. Mr Millar estimates one of them - a signed photo of George Nepia - could sell for between $400 and $500.
