Spire tops off work on church

The finishing touches are being put on the Masterton church of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which has been out of action since November last year.

After seven months of commuting to Featherston the congregation will finally be able to move back in.

"Hopefully we can use it this Sunday," said Vernon Morgan, the executive secretary.

The building has been strengthened and yesterday workers used a crane to "top it off" with a white spire.

Mr Morgan said the old spire was made of rock and took three weeks to remove. A lot of intensive labour was needed to bring it up to code.

He estimated the cost at "hundreds of thousands".

Mr Morgan said he was pleased people would be able to worship in Masterton as driving to Featherston every Sunday wasn't ideal.

The chapel's walls have been reinforced with concrete blocks, a new ceiling, carpet and lights installed.

It also has a new disabled access bathroom.

The church's new look also comes with fresh branding.

The church will hold an open day in a few weeks.
