Opportunistic thieves are behind a spate of work vehicle thefts and break-ins in the Christchurch suburb of Riccarton, police say.
There has been a spike in vehicle crime over the last few weeks, police said.
The targeted vehicles appear to be parked either on the roadside or up private driveways.
"Opportunistic thieves appear to be targeting work vehicles, utes and tools," said senior constable Lyle Prior from Riccarton's neighbourhood police team.
Simple steps, including basic car alarms, locking vehicles and removing valuable items, can reduce the chances of being hit by criminals, Mr Prior said.
