Advertisements seeking to recruit "a small number" of career intelligence officers appeared in newspaper situations vacant pages on Saturday and yesterday.
The move seems to be in keeping with the new-look SIS's move to greater openness and transparency.
SIS director Richard Woods said the service had decided to advertise openly for intelligence officers "for the first time in many years."
