Police communications centres last year received a record number of 111 calls, with 91 per cent of them answered within 10 seconds.
The remaining 9 per cent of calls were answered within 11 to 60 seconds, police figures show.
The three centres last year received 628,640 calls compared with 405,858 emergency calls in 2001, when only 86 per cent were answered within 10s, the world standard.
