A man trying to avoid road spikes lost control of his stationwagon, slammed into a parked police car and came to rest against a power pole near Geraldine in South Canterbury yesterday.
Both vehicles are writeoffs, the Timaru Herald reports.
The man had earlier failed to stop after being detected speeding by a Methven-based officer.
Mid-South Canterbury area controller Dave Gaskin said the man did slow then accelerated at high speed.
Police at Geraldine were alerted and a checkpoint and road spikes were set up near the Orari Bridge, north of Geraldine.
A small fire caused by the crash was extinguished by police officers.
No one was injured.
A 26-year-old solo father, from Christchurch, has been charged with reckless driving and failing to stop for lights and sirens.
