New Plymouth mayor Peter Tennent, who was last week nominated for World Mayor 2010, has lost his licence for speeding at 142km/h in his new high-performance Porsche.
Mr Tennent yesterday confirmed he had been disqualified for three months after building up too many demerit points for offences in his Porsche Panamera sports car and his Holden.
The ban came after he was caught speeding in the Porsche on a back road between Otorohanga and Ngaruawahia two weeks ago, he told the Taranaki Daily News.
Mr Tennent said he sped up to a overtake a car when he was nabbed.
"I put the foot down to overtake, broke the rules and got caught."
The latest offence took him to over 100 demerit points, the limit at which a driver's licence is automatically suspended.
Despite being told he could apply for a special licence through the courts, he said he was unsure if he would do so.
Last month it was announced that Mr Tennent was on a short list of 25 mayors around the world for a World Mayoral Award.
