KEY POINTS:
Police say speed and not wearing a seat belt were factors in the death of a Nelson man after the car he was a passenger in crashed into a retaining wall.
Nelson Bays Area Commander Inspector Brian McGurk said Brodie Joel Scott, 26 of Nelson, died when the car he was in crashed at the intersection of Murphy and Emano Streets in Nelson about 5.55am today.
The driver was taken to Nelson Hospital by ambulance.
The Nelson CIB and Serious Crash Investigator are investigating the crash.
"At this stage we believe that speed and the failure to wear a seat belt were factors."
