KEY POINTS:
Police are using a variety of unmarked cars and utes to catch speeding motorists.
Unmarked cars have always been part of the police fleet, but some motorists may not realise officers could be behind the wheel of several different models.
Road policing support inspector Dave Parsons said the officers used a range of vehicles.
The most common unmarked cars are the traditional Commodores and Falcons, but police also use other modern six-cylinder cars used, including Mazdas, Honda Accords, Hyundai Sonatas, and Nissan Maximas.
Some of the vehicles are fitted with radars, while officers may use hand-held lasers in other cars parked on the side of the road.
The variety of cars means people don't become reliant on being able to spot unmarked cars easily.
"Some of those people who like to speed are pretty perceptive about the types of cars we use," said Waitemata road policing manager John Kelly. "We make them lower their speed on the basis they don't know whether the blue Hyundai or the silver Accord or the red Maxima coming the other way is an unmarked police car."
