Police met yesterday to discuss new developments in the Kirsty Bentley murder inquiry, but say it is too dangerous to speculate about their significance.
Fifteen-year-old Kirsty disappeared while walking her dog along the Ashburton River on New Year's Eve 1998.
Her body was found more than two weeks later in dense scrub near the Rakaia Gorge, about 40km from where she disappeared.
The Sunday Star-Times reported on Christmas Eve that Kirsty's father, Sid, had changed his account of where he was on the day his daughter disappeared. He originally said he had travelled from Christchurch to Ashburton via Lyttelton, but he now says he returned directly to his home town and spent a few hours at a beach.
Homicide inquiry leader Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Williams said yesterday that investigations were continuing, but it would be dangerous to speculate on the significance of any information obtained to date.
The second anniversary of the murder would be a difficult time for Kirsty's family, and the police's thoughts were with them.
Sid Bentley is out of the country and cannot be reached for comment.
