Auckland rugby officials are investigating an incident when a referee was apparently hit on the head by a spectator holding a baby.
The referee had called off a game slightly early during injury time and was talking to players in the officials' tent when the spectator hit him, it was reported on the Stuff website.
The referee was attacked after a Samoan United Rugby Shield game between the Auckland Eagles and Laulii Liona at Williams Park in Mangere.
Auckland rugby referees manager Mike Elliott confirmed the incident and said it was being investigated by the disciplinary committee, said Stuff.
The Eagles won 14-12.
The police were called but the man was not found.
